After reviewing a good number of making your own hot chocolate mixes I finally found one that caught my interest due to the few wholesome ingredients. Today I decided to give the recipe a try, and it was not only a success, but I made extra batches for neighbor and friend gifts.

I followed the “Paleo Instant Hot Chocolate” recipe by Health Starts in the Kitchen used maple sugar as the substitute sweetener and raw cacoa powder. I love that they offered sweetener substitutes that make this recipe easily adjusted for a variety of different dietary needs. Click the original recipe link for sweetener options. The recipe combination I used is below.

  • 1 cup powdered coconut milk
  • 2/3 cup raw cacao powder
  • 1/3 cup maple sugar
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor.
  2. Pulse till ingredients combine, but do not over-mix or can become clumpy
  3. Use 2 TBSP of mix to 8 ounces of hot water.

I thought it tasted and came together so well, that I made an extra batch and filled jars I had from Ikea and then I printed out the cute holiday hot cocoa labels from Moritz Fine Designs. Can not wait to give these as little gifts to friends and neighbors!
